In a striking trend, all five students admitted to IIT Kanpur’s undergraduate programmes this year through the Olympiad route have chosen the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department.
For the 2025–26 academic session, IIT Kanpur offered Olympiad-based admissions in five departments — Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics, Economic Sciences, Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, and Chemistry. Despite the range of options, every Olympiad-qualified student selected CSE.
This year’s cohort includes two students from the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC) and three from the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC). The institute noted that the admission process involved rigorous evaluation of Olympiad performance, training camp participation, and eligibility criteria equivalent to JEE Advanced standards.
Unlike special schemes, Olympiad entrants will not receive additional academic mentoring or bridge courses. IIT Kanpur stated that these students are expected to integrate into the mainstream curriculum alongside peers who qualified through JEE Advanced 2025.
Currently, the Olympiad-based admission is limited to select BTech and BS programmes. The academic senate has not yet extended such pathways to other disciplines or considered talent-based entry in areas like arts, sports, or entrepreneurship.
Admission via this route follows a structured process — shortlisting based on Olympiad achievements, a mandatory written test aligned with the JEE Advanced syllabus, and oversight by a central admission committee. The institute emphasized that the mechanism ensures academic parity with JEE-qualified students.
The popularity of Computer Science at IIT Kanpur reflects a larger national trend. According to the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) 2025 report, 27,285 students listed CSE as their top choice. Electrical Engineering followed with 23,254 preferences, while Mechanical Engineering (20,261), Civil Engineering (15,846), and Chemical Engineering (Power and Automation) (15,758) rounded off the top five.
